THE DOOR TO DOOM is a rich selection containing three creepy horror stories written in the mid-1930's, two marvelous parodies of Sherlock Holmes (in one Queen Victoria is alleged to have sent Prime Minister Gladstone a bottle of poisoned whisky for Christmas), and a half dozen radio scripts from the classic series Suspense. These include "Cabin B-13" in which a young woman boards a ship with her new husband and after depositing her suitcase, discovers not only that her cabin has disappeared, but that her husband's very existence is denied by everyone on board. (This play was later filmed as Dangerous Crossing and starred Jeanne Crain and Michael Rennie.) The book concludes with an exciting discovery: the complete version of Carr's famous essay on the art of detective fiction, "The Grandest Game in the World." For many years, the last half of this essay was believed lost, but it was recently rediscovered and appears here for the first time.
