This book brings together two graphic essays by Zhenya Oliinyk — Ukrainian cartoonist and former journalist — originally published in The New York Times and The New Yorker in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022: "What We Had to Lose" reflects on a partner and a corner café taken from her by the war; "The Question of Language in Ukraine" traces a language that grew back into her body because of the invasion. Through the war's toll on intimacy, she asks what life might have looked like without it; through the language of colonization, she untangles the knotted complexity of identity. What Zhenya is working through is not Ukraine's story alone — at its core, it reaches beyond any one place, and is worth all of us thinking through together. The English text, as originally published, is preserved in this print edition alongside a Chinese translation by Liu Chih-hsin, a journalist who has long covered Ukraine. The book is bound so that the two pieces remain independent of one another — in the hope that this physical form will carry Zhenya's reflections into more readers' hearts, and that in turbulent times, we might all find a steadier way to live.
